Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC)
One of China’s principal scholarship pathways for international students.
The Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) is a national scholarship system administered through the China Scholarship Council (CSC) under China’s Ministry of Education.
It supports international students, teachers and scholars undertaking study or research in China. Depending on the specific scholarship category, participating university and academic year, opportunities can include Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral programs, as well as certain exchange and research programs.
The most important point is that CSC is not one single scholarship with identical conditions for every student. Different programs, universities and application routes have different requirements.
What can it cover?
A full Chinese Government Scholarship may provide:
- Tuition fee waiver
- Accommodation or accommodation support
- Comprehensive medical insurance
- Monthly living allowance
- Other support according to the specific scholarship program
For many current CSC programs, published monthly allowances are approximately:
Bachelor’s: RMB 2,500/month
Master’s: RMB 3,000/month
Doctoral: RMB 3,500/month
The exact benefits depend on the scholarship category and the official award.
Who can apply?
Eligibility depends on the particular CSC program, but applicants generally need to:
- Be a non-Chinese citizen
- Meet the required academic qualification
- Meet applicable age requirements
- Satisfy the language requirements of the chosen program
- Meet the admission requirements of the university
- Meet any additional scholarship-specific conditions
For applicable Bachelor’s programs, applicants may also need to complete the China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA).
How does the application work?
There are different CSC application routes.
Some applicants apply through the designated authority in their home country, while others apply through a participating Chinese university.
Admission and scholarship selection are separate decisions. Meeting university admission requirements does not automatically guarantee a scholarship.
A smarter approach
Do not apply for a scholarship simply because it says “full scholarship.”
First ask:
Is my university participating? Is my program eligible? Am I eligible under this year’s requirements?
